Goodbye, 'Millennial Pink'. This is the color that will change the course of fashion (and your wardrobe)

December 13, 2017

The one baptized as 'Gen-Z Yellow' arrives and the decline that promises to become an absolute trend: the mustard

Marina Valera - @thelittlemarin - You may not be in tune with the style of Leandra Medine -aka The Man Repeller- but the truth is that the queen of layering has been that person in the fashion world for years, who gives her name to things. He did it many years ago with the 'arm party' - the act of wearing the wrist full of bracelets - as well as with a more recent trend, the menocore - a play on words between 'normcore' and menopause that refers to the new fashion to dress like a lady. Its new denomination responds to that tonality that will replace the Millennial Pink in our lives (and in our closet): Gen-Z Yellow or, what is the same, the yellow of Z Generation.

And reason is not missing since, as described in his article, there are many celebrities born between 1994 and 2008 who have taken the yellow flag: from Kylie Jenner to Millie Bobby Brown, through Kaia Gerber or Zendaya. As with the Millennial rose, the Gen-Z Yellow does not respond to a particular yellow tone, but many colors of this color range are beginning to become fashionable. But, considering that yellow is a color that has never been easy, the 'street style' of the fashion weeks has shed some light on its possible versatility with a very specific tone: mustard.

Yes, we speak of that shade of yellow that gets its name because of its similarity with the color of the food condiment made from mustard seeds and, as Cecilia Casero, editor-in-chief of Vogue.es explains, "hits with all". A tonality much more saturated than lemon yellow, more typical of summer, which has always been associated with the autumn season due to its similarity to the leaf litter of this time of year. For more inri, the cover of October 2017 of Vogue Italia with Lara Stone photographed by Harley Weir -the first under the tutelage of its new director Emanuele Farneti- mixed both tonalities and had as protagonist one of the most photographed coats of the season: the yellow plastic hair from the first Raf Simons collection for Calvin Klein 205W39NYC.

'Fashion insiders' the likes of fashion stylist and consultant Ada Kokosar; Net-a-porter fashion director Lisa Aiken - her Instagram account reveals her new obsession with this color tone - or fashion expert Tiffany Hsu has already approved the mustard with her look Street. Coincidentally, none of these women seems to be inside that age range that includes Generation Z. What if mustard was then the alternative, not only more versatile, but also more adult to Gen-Z Yellow? It is not the first time that we refer to mustard - it was the star of 'street style' just a year ago- nor yellow.

A month ago we reported one of the trends that had caught us most by surprise but, apparently, has all the ballots to stop being so unexpected: the yellow bags. A fashion that came from the streets of New York and that not only has the approval of the influencers, but also with that of the Hadid sisters. Undoubtedly, it is only the beginning of a macro trend that will be released in spring 2018: yellow, in many cases mustard, has played a leading role in the parades of Isabel Marant, Dries Van Noten, Salvatore Ferragamo, Prabal Gurung, Self Portrait, 3.1 Phillip Lim or Rosie Assoulin to name just a few. Now we only need to see if yellow is enough for Zara to trust us, as if we needed to put aside superstitions, also in terms of style. Meanwhile, we open our mouths with this shop of mustard colored garments and accessories that you can find in stores.
 You're welcome…
